Exploring supporting policies of Japanese Government in MokTalk: Tokyo
On April 4, the MokTalk: Tokyo event co-hosted with JETRO Seoul saw participation from 42 attendees and 16 startups. This session explored the support policies of Japanese government agencies for Korean startups entering the Japanese market.
Japanese Governmental Assistance for Korean Startups
Experts from various levels of Japanese government agencies explained the support policies of the District, City, and Government, which helped Korean startups preparing to enter the Japanese market. Saeko Seno from the Shibuya City Government introduced the startup ecosystem in the Shibuya district. Afterward, Michiko Watanabe from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government explained the two main innovation initiatives in Tokyo. Hyoungil Moon covered inbound support from JETRO.
The session began with Saeko Seno from the Shibuya City Government sharing the current state of the startup ecosystem in Japan and Shibuya.
โข
Japan, as the world's third-largest economy based on GDP in 2023, is progressively increasing its budget to support startups, from 0.8 trillion yen in 2022 to 10 trillion yen by 2027. Specifically, the Shibuya area of Tokyo boasts a well-established startup ecosystem, with over 2,000 startups, more than 150 publicly listed companies, over 60 venture capitalists, 10 acceleration programs, and 100 coworking spaces.
Michiko Watanabe from the Tokyo Metropolitan Government introduced Tokyo's key initiatives: the Tokyo Innovation Base (TIB) and SusHi Tech Tokyo.
โข
TIB aims to be a global hub for innovation, connecting the global startup ecosystem with workers and support platforms. Sus-Hi Tech, the largest global startup event in Asia, is held to promote a sustainable future through diverse perspectives and technology.
Hyoungil Moon from JETRO outlined the primary support provided by JETRO.
โข
Although JETRO is a Japanese government agency, it actively supports private players and leads in energizing Japanโs startup scene by offering tailored information, providing necessary spaces for startups to operate in Japan, and facilitating networking. Accessing JETRO's services is straightforward: simply visit a nearby JETRO office, present your business plan, complete a service application, and then utilize the services.
